How a glowing igniter lights the oven
If your range oven lights from a glowing igniter, that igniter is a key as much as a flame. Viking’s service manual for older free-standing gas ranges puts igniter and oven gas valve on one circuit: as the igniter heats it passes more current, and only at the valve’s opening point does the oven safety valve open and send gas to the bake burner, where the hot igniter lights it.
How it fails
The classic failure is a bright glow and no flame: the same manual warns an igniter can be defective even while it glows, because it no longer passes enough current to open the valve fully. Earlier signs are slower preheating, a flame on one side only, a falling average temperature and a brief smell of gas before lighting. If a new igniter does not cure that, an oven that still drifts after a new igniter is the next page. - Check the range's breaker; a glowing igniter needs household power as well as gas.
