What the relays do
On a dual-fuel range the cooktop burns gas while the oven below heats electrically, and the oven’s elements draw far more current than a knob or a small control can carry. Relays take that load. In Viking’s service notebook for its self-clean dual-fuel ranges, positions of the oven selector switch and the thermostat’s cycling contacts energise numbered relays, and a power relay’s current is checked mode by mode. On ranges with an electronic oven control, the relays often sit on a board of their own.
How it fails
Every heat cycle is a switching event, so contacts pit and eventually either stop closing, leaving the oven cold, or weld shut, leaving an element on. Self-clean is the hardest duty they see. Because a selector switch, an element or the control can mimic a bad relay, the board is measured before anything is ordered. How can a Viking oven have power but no heat?
