What the cap does
The burner cap is the removable disc on top of each sealed burner. Gas leaves the ports in the burner head underneath, and the cap’s rim turns it outward into an even ring. Tilted a few degrees, the cap opens a gap on one side and crowds the ports on the other, and the ring comes out lopsided or not at all.
How it fails here
In Issaquah a cap fails at its seat long before it wears out. On the well-water side of town a boil-over dries into a mineral crust and the cap rides up on it; the crust is worst on the streets of Olde Town. Foothill damp keeps a wiped cap from drying where it meets the burner head and its ports. - Knobs off, cooktop cold: lift the cap straight up and look at its underside and the seat.
- Wipe crust off the seat and rim with a damp non-scratch pad, then dry both completely.
- Set the cap flat and centred, press the rim at a few points, and check it does not rock.

Can I keep cooking on a Viking burner with a chipped cap?
